Why families need somewhere to stay
Families come to Texas Children's from across Texas and well beyond for care that exists in very few places: complex heart surgery, fetal intervention, and long stays in the neonatal unit. When the patient is a child, a parent does not visit. A parent stays.
Admissions here can be long, particularly in cardiology and the NICU. Stays with us are limited to two weeks, so a room stays open for the next family who needs it.
A place for parents to sleep while a child is admitted
Hospitals will usually let one parent stay at the bedside. That leaves everyone else, and it leaves that parent with nowhere to shower, do laundry, or sit down properly.
