Why families need somewhere to stay

Cancer treatment is not a single appointment. Chemotherapy and radiation run in cycles measured in weeks, clinical trials require repeated evaluation, and a transplant means a long stretch of monitoring afterwards. Families arrive expecting a short visit and find they need somewhere to live for a month.

Our usual limit is two weeks. Families on a long chemotherapy schedule or in a trial at MD Anderson often need longer, and we do what we can. Call and tell us your treatment timeline.

Staying near MD Anderson through a course of treatment

Most of what makes a long treatment bearable happens away from the hospital: sleeping properly, eating something familiar, and having somewhere quiet to sit at the end of the day.

Daily treatment over several weeks

Radiation is often given every weekday for weeks at a time. A room you can leave your things in, rather than checking in and out of a hotel, makes that stretch far easier.

A kitchen you can use

Treatment changes what a person can eat, and often what they want to eat. Our guest kitchen means you can cook to that rather than looking for a restaurant that can.

Clinical trials and repeat visits

Patients accepted into a trial travel back for evaluations and follow-up. We are glad to see the same families return, and we will remember you.

Rest for the person doing the caring

A caregiver who is not sleeping is no use to anyone by week three. Every room has its own bath and a door that closes.

We are a nonprofit kept by volunteers. The suggested donation is $50 a night, and no one is turned away for inability to pay.

Houston Mennonite Guest Home offers private rooms with a guest kitchen and laundry, suited to the multi-week schedules that chemotherapy and radiation involve. The suggested donation is $50 a night.

Is there an alternative to the Rotary House?

MD Anderson's own Rotary House is a good option and worth asking about first. It also fills up. We are a smaller, quieter house that takes families whether or not their treatment is at MD Anderson, and there is no waiting list.
