Why families need somewhere to stay

Cardiac patients are referred here from across Texas and the surrounding states, often for surgery their local hospital will not attempt. The heart transplant program has carried out more than 1,450 transplants since 1975 and performs 35 to 45 a year, each one bringing a family to Houston for an extended stay.

Staying near the Texas Heart Institute

Heart surgery brings a family to Houston at short notice and keeps them here longer than they planned.

Before surgery

Workups and pre-operative appointments can run over several days. Better to stay than to drive back and forth.

Through recovery

Cardiac recovery is measured in weeks and the family needs to be nearby for most of it.

Somewhere to eat properly

Heart patients and their families are usually given fairly firm dietary advice. A kitchen makes following it possible.
