Why families need somewhere to stay

Patients are referred to Houston Methodist for transplant, for complex cardiac and neurological surgery, and for second opinions on cases their own hospital cannot take. Transplant in particular means an extended workup before surgery and a long recovery after, with the family expected to stay within reach throughout.

Transplant timelines rarely fit inside two weeks. Call us and we will talk it through rather than turning you away at the two week mark.

Staying close through a transplant or a long recovery

Transplant care asks a family to be nearby for months, not days, and to be able to reach the hospital quickly when the call comes.

Waiting for a transplant

Patients on a list have to stay within reach of the hospital. We are a short drive from the medical center and someone is here at any hour.

Recovery and monitoring

The weeks after surgery mean frequent clinic visits. Staying put is easier and cheaper than repeated trips home.

A caregiver's base

One person usually carries most of this. They need a bed, a kitchen, laundry, and a door that closes.

Quiet, deliberately

Doors are locked at ten and the house stays quiet after that. Guests here are tired, and we protect that.

We are volunteer-run and funded by donations. The suggested rate is $50 a night and no one is turned away for inability to pay.

What we offer

Questions families ask

Is there lodging for transplant patients near Houston Methodist?

Yes. We host transplant patients and their caregivers, and because transplant care runs long we can often extend a stay past our usual two weeks. Nora's Home also serves transplant families on a sliding scale and is worth asking about.

How quickly can we get to the hospital from the guest home?

We are a short drive from the Texas Medical Center. Call before you travel and we will give you the route and tell you where to park.

What does it cost to stay?

The suggested donation is $50 a night. No one is turned away for inability to pay. Tell the innkeepers when you call and the donation is simply set aside.

Who may stay at Houston Mennonite Guest Home?

Patients receiving treatment in Houston and the immediate family traveling with them. We host short-term stays only.

How do I request a room?

Call us or send a request through the website. An innkeeper answers every request the same day, and will tell you straight away whether a room is open for your dates.
